In addition to what everyone else wrote about weight.
Take a look at the root mean square, the area under the troque/hp curves. Mostly used for amplifier power rating but considering the amount of area under the curve is a whole bunch more usefula than simply looking at the peak numbers.
An engine could make 300 ftlb between 2000 and 2500 but only 100 at all other rpms.
The other thing to remember is that torque and horsepower are EXACTLY related to one another, and that is not a debate. HP=tq*rpm/5252
So if an engine can make a decent amount of torque over broad rpm range, with a high rev limit, it will be a powerful engine regardless if that peak torque value is actually not very high.
And if you maintain your torque over a broad rpm range, especially after passing 5252 rpm's, then every bit of rev that you can eke out (while maintaing troque) will directly add to the HP without a divider at that point.
Torque is a radial bending moment--what you feel pulling on the skin of your hand when tightening something with a screw-driver. HP is calculation generated using that number.
