I just mentioned hydraulic lifters because, in the old days, one of first higher revving performance mods you did was go to solids. Hydraulics will pump up at some point and give you pseudo valve float. (I still don't know you get accurate valve timing with hydraulics, especially as the engine ages.) I'm still driving 8-valves.
One other bazaar somewhat related event was on an old '80 900 B engine I had. When I revved near or over red line (5500) the engine would completely die. The ignition would cut out. I thought Saab/Bosch had put some type of rev limiter into the ignition module. Puzzling for quite a while. Ended up to be the alternator over charging (~20V) at near red line and the ignition module (luckily) cutting out until the voltage was in range.
