Well, the 20W-40 you just put in is probably OK unless you live in a cold climate. If so, you might have some trouble starting in extreme cold.
I've been using AMSOIL synthetic in my Saabs for over 26 years now. Wouldn't use anything else. I've changed to synthetic as soon as I got the cars, usually with about 100K on them. Started with 10W-40, because that was what was available. Over the years, changed to 10W-30 and now 0w-30. Never any problem, at least anything associated with the oil.
In my opinion, it would be a good idea to use a good engine flush before going to synthetic--clean out the gunk left by the use of non-synthetic.
Best quick flushes I know of are made by AMSOIL and BG. For a slower flush, you might look into Auto-Rx.
For the auto tranny, you can do it yourself, or take it to someone you trust. If you do it yourself, the simplest way is to drain the pan, replace with equal amount of fresh fluid, drive enough to mix, and repeat the process a couple more times. After that, plan to drain the pan and replace that much fluid every couple of years or 15,000 miles.
If you take it to a shop, ask for a complete flush.
For even better protection, I'd use synthetic ATF. After the first batch of drain/refills, you'll have most synthetic in there. Then you can easily go to pan drain every 30-50,000 miles (depending on which synthetic ATF you use).
