No Dean....I think 5W30 will flow faster during start-up than 20W40. Read the post.
Regarding an engine running smoother and quieter with W40 is not an idication of superior friction reduction at all. The changes that most manufactures make in oil recommendations for a particular auto is due to tolerances, a lot of testing under a wide vareity of conditions and the seals in the engine. Early on with the intro of syn oils....some engines could not run simply because the engines did not have the proper seals....even though syn was better in all friction reducing conditions.
What I know?.....Use the lightest weight oil possible given the cars year, condition and geographic area....change it often.
I have a '94 Impala SS with 260K on it.....have run 5W30 mobile 1....it continues to run well.
There many posts on this BB pertaining to oil. Seems like a lot of experts. Re; Saabs, I have had 7 of them from '82 on, I have used what the manufacture recommended, except in my 1997's I run 5W30 Mobile 1, and never had a problem. The last I heard my '82 had 360k on it and is still running strong. I have logged over 750K miles on these things....SO...maybe I am the expert?
Anyway...Use the lightest Vis oil you can ...monitor consumption and adjust up in vis if the engine burns any oil.
