I have been building and installing 2 1/2" and 3" to 2 1/2" stainless systems since June of '03. These have been on every day drivers with out chip upgrades with no problems. Performance is better and sound is improved. Now we come to cat or no cat. We use a catco stainless steel cat on our exhausts. You have 2 O2 sensors the first feels the temp first and the second tells the computed the cat is up to operating temp. By removing the cat the second sensor gets the message faster. This works. Last in the system is the muffler. This is the last chance to get the gases out fast so your choice is important. We use Magnaflow on the stock stainless systems. It is a flow thru (look in one end and you see out the other) and has less resistance. But your choices are wide. I have a Aeroturbine on mine. It swirls the gases and accelerates there exit speed under load. It has a much deeper sound and is louder at idle. I like it but your neighbors will know you have it. Does not sound ricy.
If you are going to do the chip, blowoff valve, larger intercooler etc. then the 3" down pipe is your better choice. 3" all the way is more expensive and louder. Good luck.
