I has a stock DP and sports exhaust on a 95SET. It was nice, and you could hear the exhaust at idle. It had a single muffler at the back.
Brad had a modified 99 where he remove the back muffler and ran a straigh pipe from the stock resonator back. He was exploring low cost alternatives. I drove it and it worked well, but the long straight pipe created some trumpetting that some would not get used too.
I have an 03 Aero with a Speedparts 3" turbo back system. It has two straight thru (non louvered) mufflers. It is resonable on the road and growels in a pleasant fashion at WOT. But it is very loud at idle when cold as the idle air flows are quite large. So it is boomy then, especially if you garage the vehicle and have to back it out. So when there is very little restriction, the very low frequency vibrations (idle) are hard to filter out.
Either 2.5" or 3" cat will work well. Don't loose track of the distiction between ideal or theoretical and practical. A 3" DP will allow the turbine to work better with the unseady flow of the engine.
Also note that in a single muffler application, the CAT is a significant muffler itself. As you go to a low restriction CAT, the noise is expected to increase.
