Dog engagement gearboxes can be either helical or straight cut. The usually don't have dog rings, but dog teeth and dog engagement groves which are cut directly into the sides of the gears.
I raced motorcycles in the 60's and 70's and all our gearboxes back then were "dog boxes" and incidently were sequential.
Interresting, the sequential straight cut dog gear box was the most basic gearbox in use in motorcycles for half a century and perhaps much longer than that.
For picture of the actual gears go to Quaife America website and download the file of their catalog for Volkswagen group. The 6 speed dog gearset is pictured and you can easily see the dogs and groves. link is attached
