it will be some time before I can consider buying any new car. However I did get a chance to drive all of the new saabs including the viggen at last years Saab convention. We spent a day doing a Skip barber driving school and got to punish the saabs in various aspects of driving. Running laps at limerock with and instructor and a brand new viggen was a thrill. That car has great power, and handles awsome. My only complaint as far as hard driving goes is that the seats were not supportive enough, but they were very comfortable. Running the car on the autocross track was incredible. going 50 mph into a hairpin corner, slamming on the brakes and using the abs on dry pavement to steer around the corner....sliding the car etc was about the most fun I have had in a car in a long time. On the wet skid pad I drove both the 9-5 wagon and the 9-3 5 door. Both cars were running shaved rear tires, and the pavement was very slick since it was being wetted down with sprinklers. The instructors couldnt get the 9-5 wagon to go into a skid, it would only understeer, unless they used the ebrake. The 9-3 was much more tail happy, but was easy to recover once you were aware of its characteristics.
As far as torque steer goes, I am used to a 1986 900 2 door turbo with excess hp, that has some pretty good torque steer mostly do to rapid boost rising rates. The viggen fealt fine to me. Even on the autocross track where we were in 2nd gear coming out of corners easing the gas on. It was easy to spin the wheels, but only in 2nd gear going to full boost. If you know anything about driving its a damn easy car to drive.
The audi is a neat little car.....little.... The saab has volumes more space. So it could be used for a daily driver and moving things like refrigerators etc.
I vote for the saab, slightly biased, but i think the saab to be a better all around vehicle....or wait till next year when Mitsubishi brings over the evo....thats a car I'd buy over a saab in a heartbeat...and I am a saab fanatic.
