I had similar symptoms when I had my vacuum lines screwed up. It sure looked like oil smoke, although I now know I had A/F problems, too. 1988 900 T Convertible Stage II APC, RRFPR, 30 lb injectors, 3" exhaust. Once I got the vacuum lines lead correctly, no more puffs of smoke.
Since it was Jak and Dave who helped me straighten out my mess, I'd doubt that's the solution here. But it is an interesting observation to me. Sometimes the cause you think of (bad turbo -- hey it's an '88) isn't the correct one.
