A MBC will roll off pressure and flow at higher CFMs/RPMs. A MBC+A will not do this and the only limitations will be that of the turbo and plumbing. With a MBC+A, you will have higher peak air flows and it is precisely here that an IC works well or does not.
The best effect of an ideal IC is a balance of heat transfer effectiveness balanced by the cost (pressure) drop that the IC exibits. So no real easy answer there. Quite complex actually. And the whole result depends greatly on the amount of abmient air that flows through the IC. Most wheel dynos do not provide enough air flow for a turbo engine's IC. So most dyno setups really do not let a turbo system perform well. The rolling roads are so heavy, that the prolonged dyno runs ensure that the results will suck, and guarantee heat soak. But one could argue that two runs with different ICs would still show the one that works better than the other.
From Eric's photo, the Viggen IC would appear to have less of a pressure drop for the same flow. But the Spearco appears to be much more heat transfer efficient. It is deeper and its high mass will have great advantage for short runs and responsiveness if it does not get overly heat soaked. It will heat soak much less readily than the Viggen IC. For road racing, operation is steady state and heat soak is not an issue, its the same temp all the time, but constant high speeds can really increase the heat flow.
So in general. Judging between two cores of roughly the same proportions is rather difficult without a lot of instrumentation, flow tests etc. For street use, the high mass of the Spearco core probably wins the contest. And, as I think from what I have seen, the highly efficient Spearco design with what appears to be a shorter core, is probably a good combination. The Viggen's low pressure loss approach probably balances off reasonably a bit with its longer core. Hopefully someone will set me straight if I have the wrong idea about the core lengths.
I would go for the Spearco core if you are serious about getting the best results. Thats my gut instinct.
