Be warned; taking a couple of welding courses will not make you a welder.
I have taken beginning and advanced welding courses. The instructor told us the following:
You will only become a welder with experience, lots of time with your head in a welding hood. The welding courses are essential as they teach you safety, theory and technique. It is better to take a course before you start welding because it is more difficult to "unlearn" bad habits.
I can Arc weld, MIG (Metal Inert Gas) weld (Wire Feed) and TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) "Heliarc" weld. I prefer TIG welding stainless steel.
I started welding as a Journeyman Pipefitter / Welder in an industrial enviroment in the early '80s. I welded almost every day, for more than 10 years, until I took a salaried position supervising the men that I used to work along side.
I have a 110 volt MIG welder that I use with shielding gas and bare wire. I also have a 220 volt Lincoln AC/DC 250 amp welder and a couple of Heliarc Torches. I just recently started fabricating equal length tube headers for my classic 900 turbos using 304 stainless steel. I am TIG welding the headers.
Good luck,
Jon
