Powerchips claims 150hp/152tq will jump to 162hp/168tq with their 93 octane chip. For $500 bucks that is a very good hp per dollar improvement for a n/a 2.3 car. Most cars WILL NOT make more hp just because you put in higher octane gas than it calls for. A higher octane rated car will check for knock and retard timing in the case of using too low octane, but for the opposite to be true, the 87 octane rated car would first have to know that you put in 93 (or be programmed to do adaption runs like the turbos) It would then have to start advancing timing until it saw knock and then back off.
If that's the way the car worked, you could forget about the chip just go fill up with 93 and drive WOT up a few hills till you make more hp. It would be nice, but it won't happen...
...though you could think it happened on an older car that had lots of deposits in the camber, which raised compression ratio high enough to the point where it was pinging on 87 and the ecu pulled timing, thus making less than stock hp, in which case going to a higher octane gas could allow it to restore timing and once again make stock hp.
