sorry about the somewhat long message, more background info than questions
889kt modified. A couple years ago I asaked this, and nothing has changed in tems of the engine noise, so I thought I would take a stab again:-)
the old story is the same, this occures when engine is warmed up:
---idle-- engine is very quiet for 200K (audible valve train but not much more than at 40K when I bought it!), even at the lowest oil pressures on hot day.
---loading the clutch in the driveway---to nearly stalling and lower oil pressure, engine is even quieter (my TO bearing is slightly noisy BTW), as in no valve train noise at all, nor no 'hammering' noise.
this is where it gets interesting.....I was back home for a few weeks a while ago to give the car a drive and....under full throttle/boost all the way to 6K (at about 20psi), super smooth engine. I was doing a MTN drive where i was in third gear about 4-5K rpm for several minutes up steep grades, on and off the boost. the engine just hummed smoothly!
Herein lies the confusiong (for me). THe above all being said.....if I stop the car and just rev the engine slowly from 1K to 5K.....I get smooth till about 2400RPM then I get a hammering loose sound until about 33oorpm then it smooths out.
In a way it it could be decribed a little like a manifold leak as its not a metallic knock that is distinct, or a combination of things.
Can a slight manifold leak at the turbo or close by that I can hear when cold (very faint) turn into smething so nasty...which gets somewhat erased under high EG velocity? Almost like a crack in hte manifold or or at the manifold/turbo is opening up when hot. Can weak valve guides casue this, as it seems that she runs smooth under high intake velocities (high RPM or boost). I've sort of ruled out hte high perf Sachs clutch as it doesn't make noise when cold.
If anybody has ANY insight, even partial inside that would be helpful.
thanks!
