thanks guys, more info:
idler is fairly new, scoped all pulleys, they are all quiet (and fairly new). I figger those noises would be there cold too. All timing components are 10K km old. Headgasket is new, new valve seals, new exhaust studs, gaskets, but studs were not preferred length on manifold to turbo, That connections visually seems ok, but possibly under lots of heat ther e may be a gap. maybe the manifold surface is uneven from hundreds of glowing red cycles from hard driving over the years.
Now I di remember...When I did the head refurb with new 2.3 head and turbo (after timing chain components), something improved as it was far worse than. Which leads me away to major bearings, but possiblyfiarly worn guides and some sort or leak.
Ive i do the reving from the engine side by hand, it emminates from the top side of hte engine,,,that hammering growling noise. It seems rythmic to the rpm.
would this be possibly called 'piston slap'? I'm thinking I may pull the manifold and put a new gasket with another manifold I have here. THe one I'm using is jet coated eons ago with 1600 and has mostly chipped away anyway.
