As others have said, more octane will definitely help with the detonation.
But one other thing to consider: if the engine's not getting enough fuel (going lean), that would explain both the detonation and the poor performance.
There are a bunch of possibilities here but a clogged fuel filter and weak pump are possibilities. Also if you could get your hands on the proper gauge, you might find the line pressure is low - sometimes the springs in the regulator get weak with age.
One way to check for sure is hook a digital voltmeter to the O2 sensor (run some wires to the car interior) and have someone watch it while you do an acceleration run. The voltage should go high (0.7 volts or more) indicating rich mixture and stay there as long as the pedal is near the floor. If the voltage ever goes low (< 0.4 volts) during hard acceleration, the mixture's lean and you should check it out before you burn up something in the motor!
