As a cop I can tell you that radar detectors do work, HOWEVER, you have to be lucky enough to have the cop actually using radar.
If it is a cop that is driving down the road, chances are he is using radar and the beam sent off is wide enough to get picked up by your detector so you should be good. BUT, if he is stationary he will probably use LIDAR or Laser. This beam is less than 1 inch wide at 1 mile out. Since cops are trained to aim for your license plate or bumper, your detector probably won't pick up the beam unless he is rather shakey or for some reason focuses the beam at your windshield.
Either way, be careful. They only work when and if the beam is concentrated at the detector and it only takes a split second to get a reading.
