A good engine flush, such as made by AMSOIL or BG, will remove most of any accumulated sludge or varnish.
If you don't, or won't, flush, then keep an eye on the oil level. If you note a sudden increase in consumption, change filter and top off.
If the oil gets very dirty, you might want to drop the first batch of synthetic after 4-5,000 miles.
Having said that, when I bought my 88 9000Turbo, it had 87,000 miles on it.
Shop dropped in a load of AMSOIL without a flush. I ran it 10,000 miles with np problems, no filter change, little consumption.
