heres my theory, DO it, a flush is good...

If you want to do this in your garage, do this...

this is what you will need....

2-top quality oil filters
2qts 5w30cheap oil
2qts ATF
and a 5qt jug of mobil 1 or 5 qts of your perfered synthetic oil should use 5w40, 5w30, or 10w30.

Drain old oil, install new filter...
add the 2qts cheap oil and 2qts tranny fluid
start the car and run it for 5-10 minutes...

drain oil and change filter(let oil drain for minimum of 5min)

dump in new synthetic oil....

OK now, you can now extend the intervals, mobil 1 guarentees 15k is ok, but I strongly suggest no more than 10k miles, depending on your driving style, 6k may be more suitable if you are either hard driving, towing, or short trips.

Reguardless of miles traveled, change oil Every 6months.

I either flush the oil system on cars i buy, and change to syn, or run the first syn oil chance 1500-2000 miles(to do a short interval flush)

If you are going to do this at a shop, they can flush, for usually 30-40$ and syn oil is anywhere from $40-65. So expect $100 the first time.

if a flush is done, make sure it is a complete drain and flush, as a additive flush is junk, you want something similar to a Gumout Professional flush, where old oil is drained new filter installed and flush added and car run.

motoroil and atf is a awesome do it yourself flush.
