I took my carload of trash and cardboard to the dump (aka transfer station), about 8 miles of back roads. It was super hot out and boost wasn't quite as powerful as I wanted. (works better on cold damp days). My 88 900T has 205k miles and some minor mods, but nothing crazy, and nothing compared to most new cars. I can haul a lot of cargo in it though. The road had been paved a few weeks ago, so it was a really nice ride.
On the way home, I was stuck behind someone on a super loud Harley-Davidson. He had the full leather regalia going, including leather cap instead of a helmet. He was going about 35-40 where most people go 50-55mph. He was slowing down and speeding up slightly to hear his engine making flatulent noises on deceleration and acceleration. The bike wasn't running rich as I couldn't smell the raw gasoline which is pretty common when being behind motorcycles in my area.
We came to a straightaway. I put my blinker on and snapped past. While I passed, I noticed, actually couldn't help not noticing, the ear blistering roar of his bike. He accelerated not wanting me to pass. For all that noise and its duration, he probably gained 10-15mph. At 55mph, I slid back into my lane with him a comfortable distance behind me. I was shocked his bellowing American iron couldn't keep up with my worn out car. Bad-boy bikes are supposed to be dangerously fast.
Then we came to some twisty areas. He caught up to me when I came up behind some other slow bikes. I'm sure they were NOT his riding buddies, since these were retirement age people on Honda goldwings and I hadn't seen them for the many miles I'd been behind the Harley. They turned off and we had the road to ourselves again. I went fairly quick through the turns, but not really pushing it. After 1/3 mile of that, he was about a 1000' back.
Are Harleys really this inept and underpowered on back roads, or did I get a special case here?
