i am going to have it always on. if you use some exchangers, like b&m, they have a diaphragm that either bypasses the cooler or send the oil through the cooler, temperature dependant. They also (B&M) have a unit with a fan that might just fit, but maybe not (it might be too wide).
my thinking on the original auto trans unit is that it probably isn't very efficient, like the engine oil cooler. i want to have as high efficiency as reasonably possible. although it is tempting having such an easy install with the stock cooler.
i am a glutton for punishment too, which is why my project has taken 10 times as long as originally planned.
