You are right, the size for an intake is one where the air does not need to slow down entering the box. But a really large duct is often impractical. As the dynamic losses are proportional to the velocity squared, one does not need to get excessively big to get a large improvement. With the NG900 2" (50mm) tube, the losses were horrible, but the design objective was to create a silent turbo system, not power.
With the NG900's the size of the box limited an intake tube to 3"
Again, the T5 with no MAF/AMM losses was a good system in some respects.
