I tried jacking up the front end, putting it in gear and spinning the front wheels, but the speedometer cable end in the dash (not disconnected from the speedometer itself) did not turn, so I assumed the cable had broke somewhere along the shaft.
Next I a removed the other end from the gear box and it seemed that the other end was not far enough down to fully engage the plastic gear, but that could be all the pulling I did to get the cable far enough out of dash to disconnect it from the speedometer. Once the cable was out, I grabbed one end with chuck of my cordless drill and turned the cable slowly...and...both ends turned, so the cable does not appear to be broken.
The end that went into the gear box, did look a little worn and rounded off (to some extent), so maybe it was not engaging the plastic gear? The other end was not as rounded off, but did show a little bit of wear.
So, now I am wondering...
1) How far is the cable supposed to go in on the end at the gear box and what holds it in place with the plastic gear? Just the fact that it is square? Where it sticks in at the gear box, is the plastic gear below that? If so, how far down in?
2) How far is it supposed to go into the speedometer? As far as the little stop ring on the cable? Is my best option to connect the speedometer end, lock down the plastic bayonet connector, get the gauge cluster back in place and then grab the other end of the cable and pull it out as far as possible before inserting back in the gear box and tightening the nut?
3)....or do I need to replace the inner cable with one of those speedometer cable repair kits (or hunt down a new NOS cable)?
