The "stop" is currently on the speedometer end, but I suppose it might be backwards if the prior owner ever pulled it out to grease and then put back in backwards.
What is interesting is that this speedometer cable in my Sonett looks different than the one you mentioned at the auction site, so this may be an aftermarket cable that is slightly shorter (the inner cable measures at roughly 38"). I asked the seller of the one on auction for the overall length of the inner cable. If it is longer then that could explain why there was so little slack along the route from the speedometer to the gearbox...and might account for the end pulling loose from the plastic gear in the gearbox.
