I'm a freshman Sonett owner, but somewhat tenured in classic car collecting. Value is extremely subjective and relative to many issues. The Hemmings and other book values somewhat register what little can be recorded of buy and sell transactions. Its difficult for it to be accurate as many sales go unreported if any. The other things they somewhat take into account is the desirability of the car, its demand trends, and the car itself.
In my opinion you should only pay top Dollar for what you can take home driving. Rust is a sad reality of older cars and its much less entertaining to repair than to get an engine back running. I had search for a Sonett for 5 years until I found the one I thought was the one for me, and I took a huge risk and it paid well. But it was a rare, very rare event that it came out this way. Be wary of "only surface rust", "runs and drives but..." Some sellers just want top Dollar because they want to recoup what they already sunk in. In my experience, classic cars don't recoup their investment moneywise. Some of the sellers began a restoration, took the car apart and then the interest faded away. They may have the parts to put it back together, in the process things are lost and in many occasions some remedies cause bigger headaches. Post some pictures of what you find and that would be a better way of giving you a rough estimate. Oh, and those ever present words "I already have a few guys waiting on your decision if you pass..." Its pretty much a pressure tactic in my experience. Go with a number, and be ready to walk away if you don't feel comfortable. You woke up without it, and you can surely live without the one that's right for you. All that said, hope you get yours soon.
