Silicone Valve Cover Gaskets and Some Saab Status 1 Saabers Like This Post! Posted by eric in vermont [Email] (#2058) [Profile/Gallery] (more from eric in vermont) on Sat, 26 Nov 2022 13:34:48 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Hey Fellow Saabers,
I fellow named Charles emailed me recently about a post I made way back in 2008 about the above gaskets. I wasn't able to respond directly for some reason and didn't want to think I was ignoring him.
So to Charles- funny thing, I never bought any of the silicone gaskets and have made due with the cork style. I make sure the valve covers are flat- they tend to get bumped out around the screw holes by overtightening. Then I use a very small bead of silicone on the valve cover, insert the cork gasket, in then let it dry overnight. Then I install the valve cover. That seems to work for a couple of removal/install cycles. It seems like I don't have to remove them very often as I don't put all that many miles on the cars. Most common reason is for a valve adjustment and they last a long time these days.
Some status- I haven't posted in a long time. Not sure why. I'll try to post more often. I still have 4 vintage Saabs: '64 96 Bullnose, '71 96, '74 Sonett III, and a '93 Turbo Convertible. I sold my '68 96 Deluxe this past summer via Saabnet and gave my '73 Sonett to my youngest son. Probably the last bigger job was a clutch replacement in the Sonett which meant pulling the nose, a job I don't care for. Then various odds and ends that 50 year old cars need. The Bullnose has much patina- it was painted with tractor paint by a previous owner. Maybe one day, I'll do a paint job on that one. I did get a couple of vintage Delta Mark 10 capacitive discharge ignition kits from eBay this year. One went on the two stroke and it made a noticeable change in smoothness and I haven't fouled a plug since. The other one went on the 96 with not much change in anything.
Sadly, I didn't make the national convention in Albany last year due to a memorial service I had to do. And I didn't make it to the Endless Mtns meet this year due to remnants from stupid COVID I caught. So I haven't seen any of you vintage Saabers lately. I do have people stop by the house almost weekly when they see the cars out. I had one guy stop this summer and he said "is that a two stroke??" When I said yes, he said "my dad had one. Any chance you would be willing to start it up for me?" Of course I complied. He had tears in his eyes from the the memories evoked by the sound and smell of the two stroke.
I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving! My best wishes and blessings to the vintage Saab community!
