Thanks for your ideas.
I had the VC off last weekend when I replaced the Alt and didn't see and pieces of anything. I was pleased at how clean it looked. Minimal sludge if any on the VC. Dad has in the log that he replaced the valve stem seals in 1998.
Been watching some Youtube videos on checking for compression leaks. My compression gauge has a quick connect that will fit my air compressor. I can regulate the compressor down to low pressure, but need to somehow put a on/off valve inline. The Youtube video said you can put rubber gloves over the carb and exhaust tips and when air flow is applied through the spark plug hole, if glove inflates on the exhaust tip, you have a leaking exhaust valve. If the glove inflates on the carb, you have a leaking intake valve. If you have air flow out the valve cover fill hole, you have leaking piston rings. Of course I have to make sure the cylinder is at TDC. But this is my next plan for diagnosis.
I also saw videos that describe the exhaust valve "tuliping", which sounds like the mushrooming that you mentioned. When this happens the valve actually lengthens and will not seal properly.
