That red glasspack was NOT part of the original MSS system -- it would have had a long (more than 3') flattened-out muffler section in the same aluminized color as the rest of the car. Sounds as if somebody else may have bottomed out the car earlier (you guys must have really bad streets where you live!) and replaced the original with a Cherry Bomb or similar DIY job. (Yeah, even the original MSS system is still pretty loud unless you get the optional rear resonator, but with a little aftermarket glasspack I can see how it would be REALLY loud!)

You'll have to make up the routing if you want to keep your original 51" Y collector (good idea) but have it exit in dual pipes. Assuming your pipe bender guy has a lift at his shop, maybe the two of you oughtta just put it up and dope it out, maybe bending up some welding rod or something to use as a guide. Assuming they haven't rusted away or been scraped off, the original exhaust hangers will give you a clue to the factory routing. Look for pairs of flattened, opposing hooks toward the outside edges of the floorpan, just ahead of the rear axle tunnel -- these held rubber O-rings to suspend the tubes. You can still get this type of O-ring at a mainstream auto parts stores.

Then if you look up into the wells behind the rear wheels you can see where the original mufflers were hung. These used kind of a weird hanger with bolt threads sticking out the ends and an hourglass-shaped piece of rubber about 1" long in the middle. A lot of times the rubber piece would just break, or somebody removing the system would get impatient because the threads had rusted on and would just slice through the rubber, so often all you see how is a little rubber nub. If you can get these unscrewed, you can still get this type of hanger either on order from SAAB or from NAPA (check the parts-interchange chart on VSAAB, I think they have the part # -- I've got some in the garage but too cold to go out and look!)

So if your pipe guy can find a couple of mufflers that would fit into those wells and figure out a way to hang them, then you just route a couple of pieces of pipe forward past the hook hangers and to your Y-collector and you should have a nice hybrid system that won't take too many bends... if for some reason you wanna make it really quiet I suppose you could stick another muffler in the middle somewhere, if you can find one flat enough (hard.)

My experience, though, is that if I get the exhaust TOO quiet, it just means I can hear other things a lot better than I really want to hear them, like the whine from the transaxle and the flapping of rusty metal bits hanging down underneath...
