Re safety -- well, let's face it, if you have a run-in with a dump truck loaded with gravel (typical weight 40 tons) you're toast no matter what you're driving.

If it makes you feel better, don't think of your Sonett as a car, think of it as a really safe motorcycle...

...but once you get into the thing, you'll find there's more to it than meets the eye. For example, that lump above the windshield where the rear-view mirror attaches: that's a thick-walled steel tube that's bonded into the fiberglass for rollover protection. There also are steel blade reinforcements bonded in over the door arches, and if your car is '73 or later the doors have side-impact structures consisting of 1-inch steel tubes that tie into the chassis via flat hooks on the door bottoms. Under the fiberglass is a steel monocoque very similar to the one in the 96.

So it's actually a lot tougher than it looks, especially in comparison to other lightweight sports cars of the era. (Ask me, I briefly owned a Fiat/Abarth 1000 before I got my Sonett...)

About traffic, herewith a quote from a guy I used to know who owned a Lotus Europa, that ultra-low fiberglass mid-engined 'bread van' thing. Somebody asked him if he got nervous driving it on the highway with a lot of big trucks around, and he said, "Nah, if they crowd me too much, I just go under 'em." We never figured out whether he was kidding or not...
