I've been spending some time looking at the Vintage Air online catalog, too. Which evaporator (the piece that goes inside the car) are you considering? I'm thinking that one of the behind-dash units that also incorporates heater and defrost might make the slickest installation, since it could replace the existing heater box and might not steal as much passenger footroom as an under-dash unit. But I'd be curious to see such a setup 'in the metal'!
Re compressors, I'm guessing that a modern axial-piston compressor will run much more smoothly than the old York vertical-piston compressor that SAAB used, so might be more friendly to the existing balance shaft gear. Of course, any additional load on that gear will be bad news if your bearings are already dodgy.
I'll bet you can find the dual pulley from a scrapped car if you ask around enough online. I've got one on my engine, but I want to keep it for when I get around to doing my own a/c conversion!
Will be really interested to hear how you come out with this. Please keep track of what parts you use and take photos, so the rest of us can benefit from your knowledge!
