I am not sure you necessarily need a SAAB specialist. You just need a decent
garage. If you decide on overhauling your gearbox then the garage should
take it out and put in a gearbox specialist. Gearboxes are not really garage
jobs

I would go to a scrapyard for one ... ehmm, there again I would be doing the
replacement myself so I could afford to chance it.

There is a 2nd hand parts dealer in the North East of England where you could
source a gearbox (how good it will be depends on how long is a piece of
string).

Try Boam Engineering, Howden le Wear, County Durham, 01388-766205. See how
far you get

You could see the engine rotating hard if you simply pulled the accelerator
lever with the bonnet open. I never had the rubber part of the mountings
fail. However on cars I bought I found:
1 broken bracket (the one which supports the power steering pump).
1 broken bolt (nasty) on the other bracket (left handside of the car).
Common problem, there are 2 shortish (8 mm) bolts which bolt the right hand
bracket onto the engine head. I have yet to see a car which does not have
damaged threads on the head where those two bolts fit. The head is soft and
the bolts are very difficult to get back in place because of the tilt and
weight of the engine. If those are missing (too much bother to fit) there
will be excessive movement which will eventually damage everything else.

To replace the gearbox the engine has to come out at that point it is easy to
check the brackets. If the bracket to head bolts are missing they should be
replaced although there is no need to remove them for this job (I think).

Most of your costs will be labour. What you'll get in garages is some
pretence that a SAAB gearbox is much harder to replace than in other cars
blah blah blah.

If it helps at all, hope someone esle can reccomend SAAB specialists.

Charles

BTW. The two bolts I am talking about are difficult only when the head has
been removed whilst the engine is in the car.

Tip of the day. Use proper gearbox oil, and the only one you'll get is
Duckhams Hypoid 75 and you'll have extreme difficulty finding it. I had to
specially order (when I too had an 83 900) a 12 half litre bottle box. It
only cost œ18 back then. So here is Duckhams oils tels if you need to find
your nearest supplier (if still valid as it has been some time) 0800-010717
or 0181-2900600
