Re: acumulator

Interesting, my shop manual, 5:2 ABS braking system, page 500-9 states in
part:

stores the
pressure... Brake fluid acts on one
conected to a sealed chamber containing nitrogen...

Now it has been a real long time since I studied fluid dynamics, however
as the normal operational pressure of the accumulator is 2030 - 2610 PSI
if the nitrogen was not pressurized prior to instalaation you might as
well not have any. If my memory is correct, and it has been a long time
since I cracked these books, at a given volume, lets say 2, if you have
an initial gas charge of 20 psi and then put fluid in to a pressure of
40 psi the gas now occupies a volume of 1. If we do the math on a non
charged (atmospheric) area (volume) then introduce a fluid pressure of
say 2500 PSI we can see how much space is now occupied by the gas.
remember you cant compress a fluid.

Though I have not looked further I assume that the initial nitrogen
charge in the accumulator would be at least 1/3 to 1/2 the working
pressure, as is normal in most fluid (pressure or energy) accumulators.
