look into the damage, which they're leading me to expect will be a
warranty replacement of the motor, I'm taking your advice and
considering options.

I've heard of some dealers doing complete crate-engine replacement,
and others just repairing the heads and valves. Probably depends
on the level of damage.

Don't let Saab off the hook, they said they'd warranty belt replacement
and therefore are also responsible if they do it wrong.

> 1. I have a 5-speeed tranny. If they offer a replacement engine,
would a 2.0 L bolt up to the transmission? I have the traction control,
and it works well, but I could get by without it. Also, I would assume
a new computer would nave to be installed. So basically what I'm
considering is having them install another type engine, a 4 -Cyl turbo.

I doubt they'd do that. There are probably product liability issues.
You could pay to have the whole thing done yourself but I assume it
would be a lot of work/expense or not even feasible, I seem to
recall that the front springs are different etc etc on the V6.

My advice would be insist on a new crated engine or get Saab to
'make good' on a good trade for a new car (possibly the loaner
if you think it .

> 2. The loaner they are letting me drive is a '99 9-3SE with a turbo
engine, possibly a 2.3 L. It's got about 12 kilomiles on it. On a trip
to Denali Park in it this weekend, I was pretty impressed with it's gas

The 9-3 SE engines are all 2.0 turbo (as are the non-SE's...) at least
in the US. They're very nice to drive, and have better brakes and
front seats than your 94 model.

Nothing major to watch for. I'm not particularly fond of the handling
of the 9-3's though. The ride height seems a lot higher and traction
seems worse for some reason compared to the older NG900's.

The 9-3 engine is nice and very flexible, although the automatic
is probably worth avoiding.

I actually get better gas mileage on my 900 V6 auto than I have
on any 9-3 loaners though, FWIW. That may just be my driving habits
in a loaner car. :/

In the later 99 5 door 9-3 SE's there is a high output turbo
option, 200BHP. You can tell them by their different wheels
(not Viking, but 5 spoke I think).
