I had this happen to one of my batteries. It was an sealed, OEM for a Honda. In my case it didn't explode, but it almost melted down. I suddenly lost all power, then the battery heated up even though it was disconnected. It was too hot to handle for 2 days while it cooled down out of the car. I believe it was an internal short due to the fact it served me well for about 9 years. Moral of the story...don't push the envelope on lead acid batteries. Even a weak battery can pack a punch if shorted.
