Subject: 125,000 mi. service (opinions wanted)
=================
Hi. newbie alert and dumb questions warning. In a sea of expertise out
there, I feel like a total car idiot, but i sure would appreciate your
wisdom.

I have a 1996 Saab 900s Automatic 2.3L 4cyl. with 125,000 (mostly highway)
miles on it.

Our good friend SID told me it's 'Time for service' today, and I called the
dealership, since I don't think it's a good idea to have Joe's mechanic shop
do your major services (right?)

I've noticed my shifting isn't as smooth as it once was...a little
klunk-ier...I heard one can have the belts adjusted and the tranny
completely flushed. When I called the dealership seemed to concur, but later
said, on that model, there is no belt adjusting, they're self adjusting and
all they will do is flush it out (do they clean any filters in there or
anything like that? do they open it or just drain it as is?), and hope that
helps.

Will it? I've NEVER had the tranny serviced on this car and hear I'm overdue
for it form saabnet users, and I'm wondering if this counts as a tranny
service or not?

I also complained of decreased milage/performance. They said they can
optionally do a 'motorvac' complete fuel injection system cleaning for an
additional $120 where they disconnect from the fuel tank and fuel in
cleaners while they run it through all injectors etc. if I understood what
he was saying. Is this a good idea? I would like my car to be a little
smoother and a little stronger than it has been performing lately.

The 125,000 mile full service/tune up is estimated to cost $480 with all
fluids and filters changed. Is that a lot or is that normal? (I got a bit of
sticker shock, but if that's what it costs, fine just say so) this would
include the transmission flush.

I guess if I went for the additional motorvac service it would bring it to
an even 600 smackers and I could do it in good conscience if I knew these
prices were normal. Can you tell me that?

Also what is a 'normal' price to have a saab dealer change your brakes? Mine
are squeaking and am pretty sure they're done. But the lugs are on SOOOOOOOO
tight I can't take off the wheels to check without a bigger lug wrench or
something? (ideas here too would help).

Thanks for the help. and thanks in advance for not making me feel like the
complete car idiot i know that I am!!!

Tom.
