won't idle when hot
Posted by John Gillis (more from John Gillis) on Tue, 21 Sep 1999 13:42:20
My 1990 900S with manual transmission and 127K miles has a problem that the local SAAB mechanic can't seem to solve. Conditions: The ambient temperature is above 80 F., and the car is fully warmed up (driven at least 20 minutes), and then I turn the car off and try to restart within 30 minutes.
What happens is the car starts, then instantly dies. If I keep my foot on the accelerator slightly, the car will stay running, but as soon as I take my foot off the gas, it will die. After 5 or 6 times trying like this, it might eventually 'catch', stumble, and then come up to a normal idle (but may be high for a few moments).
One time I started the car, kept it running with my foot on the gas, and drove for 2 blocks without ever taking my foot off the gas. When I eventually took my foot off, it died. After coasting to the side of the road, and 3 or 4 more starts, the idle control finally took over and it ran normally.
>From a cold start, the engine starts and runs perfectly.
After I eventually achieve normal idle from a hot start, it runs normally.
It does not matter if the air conditioning is on or off, though when it is on that adds load which makes the condition worse.
Last year the Air Mass Meter was replaced for another reason, so the mechanic doubts that is the problem. Vacuum hoses have also been checked, and they are fine according to the mechanic. Otherwise the car has received full and complete regular maint. since we bought it new.
Thanks for ANY ideas.
John
