Electrical problem

Fellow SNAABs --
This one should be a no-brainer, but . . .
A couple of months ago, the battery on my '86 900 was going dead periodically, an occurence I traced to a broken taillight interrupt switch behind the dash.
Or so I thought.
I don't often drive the car between Friday at 5 pm and monday morning, and the past couple of weekends, the battery has been very low by Monday morning. This Monday, I truned the key, got nothing but idiot lights, panicked (I had my 2-yr.-old daughter in the back), turned it again and it cranked slowly and somewhat grumpily to a start.
I drove around for about an hour, thinking that should charge the battery -- and it did, but not completely. Now, the same low battery condition happens overnight, not over a weekend.
So it seems that I have a slow short somewhere, and I think I know how to isolate the circuit on which it is occurring (though I'm wondering if it is so slow that I may not detect it with a VOM).
It seems that I may also have an alternator that is on its last legs, since my battery may not be recharging very completely.
Maybe.
Can anyone give me a simple alternator test (I have the 8-valve, normally-aspirated dawg of an '86 900 engine)? Or a clue as to what else may be wrong with Helga, other than the usual geriatric, slow-to-get-going thing?
Gtatefully,
JC ('86 '900, 149k 'Helga')
