I have a 1988 Saab 900i and I asked for help regarding a squeak at the front
right wheel and I got a couple of responses which proved helpful (Thanks
Charles and Tom). It turned out that it was a sticking brake caliper. I have
a Haynes manual and I thought that I was beginning to lose it because I
could not relate the description of the brakes in the book to the ones on my
car. I then found that there was a supplement at the end of the book for
later model changes and found out that from 1988 it all changed.
Unfortunately the brief summary of the new system is not very well covered
in the supplement. Have you any addresses of web sites that give a good
guide to the front brakes of a 1988 Saab 900i?

Clive

Subject: 86 900 Electrical woes, Vol. VIII

Fellow Snaabs,

My litany of woe continues. My ongoing battery/electrical problems have
taken a strange turn.

The quick explanation of the problem is that my battery seems to fail to
hold a charge overnight. I was told to do a voltage test on the battery
and alternator with a VOM. This proved satisfactory (though perhaps
significantly it was done in 70 degree F temps and the problem has worsened
as the temps here dipped into the 40dF range).

Then it was suggested that I buy a tester gadget from Radio Shack -- one
with 6 LEDs. This device showed me a weak battery (duh!) and a less than
lusty alternator. Fine, but which is right?

The raeson for my writing is a strange manifestation of the problem which,
I hope, will be revelaling to those of you Snaab gods who read the entrails
of Swedish cars: When I go to start the car in the AM (after not having
run it for 14 hrs.) at the first key-turn I get nothing. SOmetimes for
two key turns and cranks. Then, by the thirs attempt, it rather sleepily
turns over and fires.

If the battery is too dead to turn the engine on the first attempt, how
does it recover power on the second or third? Or is this related to the
cold?

I'm starting to think that I should just buck up and replace the battery
and start over. What a long strange journey this has been . . .

Perplexed in Erie, PA I am . .

Subject: driveline noise
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

Hi all :-)

I just got my 86 900s 5 speed , back from a local muffler shop(they put
on a new muffler), I drove it for 1.5 hours(hiway driving) I started to
notice a new noise.

It's a mid to hi pitched noise, that can be heard on acceleration, and
goes away when I lift off the throttle. The noise changes pitch (higher
pitch) when I accelerate and changes pitch each time I change gears. So
it seems to match engine RPM rather than overall speed. I hear it at
low RPM 2000 and can't hear it under the engine noise at high RPM.
While maintaining a slight acceleration I can slowly disengage the
clutch and the noise will go away when the clutch does disengage.

That's all that I can come up with for sounds and symptoms...

My thoughts are: clutch plate or some drive gear in the transmission

Your thoughts....

Many thanks

Andy
