the immortal Artemis (also: more on emissions)
Posted by Roxana Eshghi (more from Roxana Eshghi) on Mon, 13 Dec 1999 17:50:52
Dear All:
I was reminded, a couple of weeks ago, that I have neglected to send the list the smokin' hot news that Artemis is now back home to Mama.
It did take a long time (more than four months), four different body shops, a really awesome body man (Glen Hazlewood at the Lansdowne body shop in Richmond) (don't trust Lansdowne to paint your Saabs, though; for a good paint job in the Greater Vancouver area, see Bill Dobson at Burrard Autostrasse), and, oh, yes, AND MONEY, but... aren't the best problems the type that *can* be solved? There's so much that money can't fix; I was fortunate to be troubled by a problem that money could help. Also, one can earn money back, but once your Saab is gone, it's gone forever.
I ended up getting another car (an '89 sedan) (Artemis is a '90 900 turbo hatchback) to act as body donor for Artemis's front end. I still feel guilty about having ripped apart a perfectly good car in order to save my own, but I alleviate that guilt, somewhat, by remembering that the front half of that car has certainly moved up in the world by becoming a part of the unit known as Artemis.
Glen is a perfectionist, and did a wonderful job in the cut and paste. The seam between the original frame and the graft is absolutely imperceptible. Also, he used the front pillars of both cars, so now Artemis is stronger than the day she rolled off the assembly line.
There is still more to do: Artemis still does not have headlamp wipers, and she has inherited a front bearing rumble from the donor, which is annoying. There are also various trim bits which will need to be replaced. This will all be rectified in the new year. She did, however, slaughter this year's emissions test and drag it home by the hair for dinner. Results were:
HYDROCARBONS: driving idle maximum allowable: 90.00 ppm 120.00 ppm vehicle reading: 1.00 ppm 0.00 ppm 'a good reading for your vehicle': 8.00 ppm 6.00 ppm
CARBON MONOXIDE: driving idle maximum allowable: 0.90% 1.00% vehicle reading: 0.02% 0.00% 'a good reading for your vehicle': 0.02% 0.00%
OXIDES OF NITROGEN: driving maximum allowable: 1200.00 ppm vehicle reading: 153.00 ppm 'a good reading for your vehicle': 85.00 ppm
I personally feel that Artemis is cleaning air, at this point. The air in those testing centres is positively filthy; any pollutants that showed up on that test were surely emitted by another car and sucked into my lean, mean, air purifying machine.
Anyhow, the moral of the story is... take your own road! Don't listen to others who tell you that your Saab is dead; a Saab doesn't die until its owner accepts its death.
Thanks to all who wrote with support. Please let me know if you'd like to receive a scan of this year's Artemis Christmas card.
Yours very truly and gratefully,
Roxi & Artemis, together again
