I have had a similar problem on an 89 9000t.

It turns out on my vintage that there area couple of very light gage
springs in the mech. mine had the opposite problem it would unlock itself
on a whim when ever. Well I found the bad spring and replaced it,
unfortunately with a slightly heavier gage than original. the spring
would keep the mech. from moving all the way up, or would pull it
slightly down after the key was released. Question>> if you hold the
key in the full unlock position will the door open properly? if so I am
guessing that you have the problem that I had with the mech. falling down
slightly after the key is rekleased.

removing the door panel and observing the action of the mechanism may
help you determine if a spring gave it up.
