How many miles on a new car?
Posted by Ari Kahan (more from Ari Kahan) on Wed, 16 Feb 2000 09:59:00

How many miles should there be on a brand new car?
This may sound like a silly question, but:

The new 9-5 Aero is kind of sporty. I would expect that
most people who take one of these things on a test drive
would stomp the accelerator a few times to see just how
quickly it accelerates. When the car is brand new, this
sort of behavior is not exactly compatible with standard
'break-in' procedures.

So, if I'm going to buy a new one of these, it's important
to me that it hasn't been test driven by a bunch of yahoos
before I take delivery. I suppose that one way to gauge
how much of this has gone on is to look at the odometer, but
I'm sure the odometer, even on a car that's never been used
as a demo, is not at zero: I expect that Saab does a quick test
of its own prior to shipping the car.

So, how many miles should one expect to see on the odometer
of a brand new, never-been-test-driven by the public, never-been-driven-
home by the salesman, never-been-driven-from-one-dealer-to-another
9-5? Five? Ten? Twenty?

Thanks,

Ari
