Manual Transmission & Smell? Should I worry?
Posted by Jeffrey Tarnoff (more from Jeffrey Tarnoff) on Fri, 25 Feb 2000 22:18:02
I'm hoping someone can assist me with a question I have....this may have an
obvious answer, but when it comes to cars, I have to admit I'm far less than
an aficionado.

I purchased last week a 1999 9-3 SE 5 sped (slightly used--14,000 miles).
Yesterday, my sister borrowed the car and said she had some trouble with it
when she was trying to get going again after stopping at a light on a rather
steep hill. It seems that she was afraid of rolling back into the car
behind
her and ended up stalling the car. Then, she said she had a problem after
restarting the car...she said it was moving very slowly and making a lot of
odd noises. Based on what she told me, it sounded like maybe she had the
clutch partially disengaged while the engine was at a high rpm, but I'm not
sure, as I wasn't there.

I took the car for a short drive last night and everything seemed OK, except
for a pretty strong burning smell I noticed. Today I drove to work in the
car, and still seems to be working fine, but I still noticed the smell--but
less pronounced.

I have an appointment for the car to be serviced for a couple other minor
things late next week, but I'm wondering if something may have been damaged
and I shouldn't be driving the car until they can check it out?

Thanks in advance for your help.

-Jeffrey
