Sounds like the clutch is glazed. I once did this after trying to pull another car out of the mud. The clutch smoked pretty bad and then slipped and burned for a few hundred miles after that. It eventually wore through the glazing and lasted another 100,000 miles - went over 200,000 in total before replacement.
