saab hell
Posted by Stephen Pratel (more from Stephen Pratel) on Thu, 2 Mar 2000 20:30:28
Well, I just went through SAAB hell.

I decided to change my Brake Rotors with this brake job (pulsing got real
bad, almost unbearable at Highway speeds).

Well, I have no idea when the rotors were changed last, and the caliper
mounting bolts were absolutely frozen . I broke 3 sockets, rounded off two
bolts (result of broken sockets), had to grind off the heads of the two
that were rounded, and had to resort to buy a $10 impact socket. Then, I
broke my special tool to rotate the piston back in place, and tore the dust
boots. But, after 8 hours, the job was done, and the rear brakes took 20
minutes for both. Fortunately, the local SAAB dealer had the bolts in
stock!! If they didn't, I would have just put it together, as I has 1/3 pad
left.

A friend (whose shop I do all my work in) gave me a spanner wrench, it
worked wonderfully for turning the piston back in.

I am concerned about the torn dust boot. It is in place, and does not have a
piece missing, but there is a tear now. I did gook the area up with that
synthetic Caliper grease to try and keep the wet stuff out, but I imagine
after 170K miles, New or a caliper rebuild is in the cards in the near
future anyhow, or maybe as long as the next brake job. I just hope the
brake pads last at least another 60K miles.............

Thanks for letting me rant.

Drive safe all
