Jack,
My 86 9000 turbo heater blower went bad at around 225k miles.
It was making the same squealing noises as David describes. After about
5-10k miles it would sometimes not turn on startup and eventually would not
turn at all. I sold the car at 248k miles and warned the future owner. I
tried lubricating from the outside but had no luck.

My vote would be to replace the motor now if you find a unit within your
budget. The only conciliation is that the natural flow of air will keep a
puff of heat flowing when on the highway if it does go bad - not much but
enough to keep your fingers from freezing.
