Thanks for the response. As I got into the repair, I realized that the heater hose I replace 6 months ago has managed to wiggle itself free, right at the heater core. This looked just like a leaky core from inside the car, but the core itself was fine and nothing needed to be replaced. Yes, I do feel pretty stupid about this one, but the relief over not having to replace parts makes it OK.
To date I have had no problems with the blower motor, the two high fan speed episodes relate to the resistor/diode pack, so the hose was reconnected and all is well again.
I had a car with a broken blower motor one winter. Fortunately, I had a 60 mile HIGHWAY drive each day, so the car was warm with just the natural fresh air flow through the car due to the highway speeds. Not a good situation though, especially when I got caught in traffic, etc. I get cold just thinking about it.
