300 ++ BHP!!!

Alert me when someone posts in this thread:

So I got all my hardware mods squared away and I finally scraped together enough coin to get a custom Ecutek tuning session at KTR Performance in Ayer, Mass (45min outside of Boston)

First a word about the shop, its a very professional appointment only place, in a huge modern top notch facility. I was expecting to see a lot of pricey tuned euros there and few sports cars...I was shocked to see not only a plethora of high price Italian steel, but to find the shop full of classic race cars too! There were more red Ferrari’s, from before I was born with roll cages than I could shake a stick at!

Franz Diebold is a tech there and a master ecutek tuner. He took us through the drool gallery (main shop) to the four wheel dyno room in the back. Franz strapped the car in and made some base line runs. The hard ware mods are GP Moto intake elbow, K&N drop in, JDM STi intercooler, Samco IC hoses, Crucial Uppipe, 3" divided dp with single metal car, 3" all the way to axle back STi rear muffler.

KTR's Dyno shows 150-160hp for a bone stock wrx (yes this is conservative as 170-180 is common on other dynos) So a 227hp car putting down 160 means a loss of about 30%. So to calculate crank hp you can divide the wheel hp number by 70%.

The untuned runs yielded a max hp of 185 at the wheels or roughly 265hp at the crank. This is pretty good and shows a strong engine, with almost 40 hp in gains just from hardware. What it also shows is that power was erratic with some detonation under WOT and large variances between the three untuned runs. The car was certainly powerful, but not nearly a smooth as stock or tuned.

I watched as Franz laid down run after run adjusting timing and fuel maps to take advantage of the hardware. After 20 runs he had managed to smooth things out to give nice torque and hp, with the torque starting much earlier and the hp staying on much longer than the stock maps. Boost was only kicked up to about ~15.5 max, though it now holds 12+ at redline. The final total was 223.2whp/222wtq. For frame of reference this is slightly better than what the average STi does on their dyno, even though STi experience less drivetrain loss.

Calculating based on their dyno's loss, it totals out to 319hp/317tq at the crank!!!

Or an improvement of 92hp and 100ftlbs over stock!

Now for the subjective....

The car doesn't really feel much faster, what it feels is much much smoother. Without the proper software, it would roar to life and roughly transition into power. Now it just smoothly builds up a nice head of steam and keeps gaining power through the rev range to the point where you go :|:):lol:

1st gear is too quick to really tell, second is nice but finishes rapidly, in third fright begins to set in around 5k rpm and in fourth at high way speeds 65 becomes, 75 becomes 85 become speeding ticket fear very very quickly. 5th gear is much improved to the point where shifting down on the high way when the traffic slows up a bit is a rare thing.

I just this done on Thursday, and I had to opportunity to thrash it up and down Stratton Mountain with my buddies at SOC. Even guys with tuned 9000 Aeros (which make north of 300hp and 400tq) were quite impressed with the way the little 9-2x tugged itself up the hills (okay they were most impressed with the way I stood on it through 1st and 2nd gear with not a drop of the power getting wasted in wheel spin).

All in all I can't recommend KTR enough (www.ktrperformance.com) It was a bit more expensive that a cobb set-up, but the power and custom tune are unmatched. Also the experience of watching Franz build up more and more HP on the dyno was one of the coolest things I've seen in my whole life.
