Finished replacing the rear wheel bearings on my 1976 99 and now there is absolutely no looseness. It looks like the failure mode is the seal hardens, dirt gets in, and the inner bearing starts to wear. The 208,000 mile, 28 year old grease was still there, but dirty. I replaced all the bearings with SKF made in Mexico from TheSaabSite.com, a site sponsor. The originals were Timken made in England.

I looked for the most expensive grease I could find. I went with Red Line Synthetic CV-2 grease at $12 for 14oz. I liked this stuff. If I do a CV boot again, I would use it. I probably won't be doing wheel bearings for another 30 years.
