Close the roof fully. Remove the cover at the rear view mirror that pops
out. Under it is a screw, remove that ands remove the bigger plastic
panel. Three screws hold the sunroof motor in place, remove them and
drop the motor leaving the wiring intact. Run the roof switch and look
at the gears on the motor, there is an arrow, The motor should stop at a
point where the arrows line up. Reinstall the motor when this is
achieved. If it gets out of time again, you may have either a stiff
cable or stripped gear on the motor. If the motor has a 17 mm nut on it
visible with just the pop out cover off, run the roof fully open and
retorque the nut to 18 in/lbs. This tightens down the clutch and
prevents its slipping if it was worn or if the roof is stiffening up.

There are other adjustments for the roof alignment, but aren't usually
necessary unless the roof is removed. They require two locking pins to
hold the roof so the cables can be adjusted. Without the tools, best
left alone.

89 was a split year with these early clutched motors and the later non
clutched motors. The clutched motors are no longer available.

A bit of Vaseline on the sunroof seals and grease on the slides, tracks,
cables, and pivots eases operation. A screwdriver applied to the screws
visible with the sunroof fully open at the roof rails ends rattles and
helps keep the tracks in alignment for smoother operation. They will be
loose, especially the rear ones. usually Phillips screws.
