There's a couple of typical mechanical and psychological things going on here.
Phsycologically you think someone is full of it and you're probably not making their day either. A typical customer service interaction.
Mechanically there's typically gonna' be a certain amount of vibration in a four cylinder car of any brand that will raise issues with some. The fact that you have to go out of your way to find it by lugging it in the manual mode doesn't mean there's a defect that needs to be corrected.
So #1, no you are not right. It's the mix of RPM and load that causes lugging, not RPMs all by itself. A slapshift box and a lockup torque converter can be lugged in manual mode. You're saying that a slapshift can't be abused, but you have in fact found a weakness. At higher RPMs, a more typical, there's that word again, use for manual mode, a slapshift is unflappable or fool proof. Can't prevent everyone from cutting themselves with a knife, type of analogy.
So #2 there's nothing wrong with the car. When it does that put in in drive.
