Daytime running lights make a Saab headlight switch very confusing. In the off position the headlights and the dash lights are still on. There's no seperate DRL lights like in some cars.

In the off position you can only flash the high beams, they won't stay on and the foglights won't work, but the headlights and dashlights are still on. I suppose if you never needed your brights or fogs you might never notice.

The middle position is the one to avoid. It's for parking lights. When this position is selected the headlights/dashlights are still on normally, but when you shut the car off the parking lights stay on, draining the battery. Normally a Saab shuts off all the lights when you remove the key, but in the middle position the parking lights stay on, say for parking on the side of a dark country road.

The on position enables the high beams to stay on and allows the fog lights to function and when you remove the key shuts everything off.

The simple "bar", not the lock, unlock or trunk, on your key fob turns on and off the halo lighting which is the parking lights and the interior light. This bar also is the panic alarm if held and will sound the horn if held down. Halo lighting is useful for checking for bad guys in and around your car as you appoach it.

Courtesy headlight feature allows you to leave the headlights on temporarily for 30 seconds to light your way upon exiting the car in dark situations. Once you turn the car off, remove the key and open the drivers door, if you flash the brights by pulling the turn stalk, the headlights will "stick" on, and stay on for another 30 seconds. The 30 second timimg is adjustable, longer or shorter, with a Tech II at your Saab dealer. Note that in a 9-5 you must shut the drivers door again to activate the courtesy lights, but with a 9-3 just key out, and drivers door open, no need to shut it again.
